FROM PASTOR KENT:
I am pleased to share with you that we will be adding another part-time staff person starting this September, to help us with our Middle School and High School ministries. Our new part-time Interim Youth Minister is Pastor Katie Slack. Pastor Katie comes to us through a partnership with Interserve Ministries. Interserve Ministries not only provide interim youth ministry support, they will help our congregation assess our ministry and mission vision, goals, and needs, and then help us determine our next steps for staffing our ministries.
Please welcome Pastor Katie, who you will get a chance to meet on Rally Sunday, September 9! Also, take some time to read through her impressive bio.
Pastor Michelle will continue serving part-time, focusing on “Faith Formation for All” and “All-In Relational Ministry.” She will also continue sharing preaching and worship leadership with Pastor Kent.
Starting this fall, Pastor Kent will be taking the lead on Confirmation, in partnership with Pastor Katie. He will also be working with Interserve Ministries, Pastor Katie, the Mutual Ministry Committee, leaders from our “Faith Formation for All” and our Youth Ministries to assess our vision, goals, and ministry needs, before making a recommendation to the Church Council on next steps for staffing.
It is a blessing and answer to prayer to have such gifted, strong ministers join us in strengthening and growing our ministries to children, youth, families, and adults of all ages. Truly, God continues to be with us through all of the changes and transitions of our shared ministry and mission here at Christus Victor.
If you have any questions, concerns, or ideas, please talk to any of the members of the Mutual Ministry Committee (Andrea Perendy, Cassi McMayer, Diana Buffie, Sarah Thomson, Shane Colin), the Church Council (Sarah Thomson, Shane Colin, Barb Damlo, Mike Orman, Mike Radke, Dawn Glewwe, Kristin Schultz, Lori Olson, Karl Dobberman, Ron Hansen, or Heidi Horgen), or myself. We would love the opportunity to talk about all of the wonderful things that God is doing here at Christus Victor!
Bio for Pastor Katie Slack
Pastor Katie Slack has been an ordained minister since 2014. She is a 2010 graduate of St. Olaf College, and of Luther Seminary, St. Paul in 2014. During her year-long internship at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brainerd, Katie helped pilot the outreach program known as Operation Sandwich in its first year, coordinating youth volunteers in this peer outreach program. She was also involved in children and youth ministry throughout her internship, taking leadership roles in Confirmation, VBS, and Summer Stretch programming and events.
In 2014, Pastor Katie received her first Call to Grace Lutheran Church in Ely, MN. In her three years serving as solo pastor of Grace Lutheran, one of Katie’s main areas of passion and focus was on revitalizing the church’s ministry to and with children and youth. Pastor Katie redeveloped the Confirmation program, restarted the youth ministry, and worked to strengthen and add depth to the church’s ministry for children and young families in worship, in Sunday School, throughout the church’s mission.
In the past year, Pastor Katie has served as a full-time chaplain resident at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN, while completing her clinical pastoral education. Katie is excited to continue pursuing her passions and callings to both chaplaincy and ministry with children, youth, and young families.
Pastor Katie grew up in rural Iowa, but spent many weekends in Minnesota throughout the year, visiting her grandparents and other relatives, and has always considered Minnesota her second home (despite all of the Iowa-jokes lobbed at her from Minnesotans throughout her life!). Katie met her husband Patrick in their first year at St. Olaf College, and the two were married shortly after graduating from St. Olaf in 2010. Katie and Pat have three beautiful, rambunctious children, and all three are October babies: Benjamin, who will be 5, Theodore, who will be 3, and Elijah, who will be turning 1. Katie and Pat live with their three children and their cat Mowgli in Plymouth, and enjoy road trips, reading novels, playing board games, and cheering on the Minnesota Twins!
