We are excited to share the opportunity for CVLC members to participate in a 5-week study on Traditional Dakota Spirituality at Easter Lutheran Church in Eagan, along with members of several other local churches. The class will be an opportunity to look at, reflect on and have conversation about how traditional Dakota spirituality and culture shaped the Dakota people, and explore how our own spirituality and culture shapes us. The class will be led by Jerry Friest, a retired ELCA pastor and member of Easter Lutheran Church in Eagan.

This learning series is based on Charles Eastman’s book, The Soul of the Indian. Charles Eastman (Ohiyesa) is a significant author, activist, lecturer, and one of the first Native American physicians.  He was educated at Dartmouth and sought to bring understanding between Native and non-Native Americans.

Because this class is based on Eastman’s book, we feel it is appropriate to support a local Native American bookstore for our materials.  Easter Lutheran Church will pre-order books from Minneapolis-based Birchbark Books at a small discount. This ensures all participants will have the same edition of the book so we can reference specific pages as needed. Although there is no charge for the class, we anticipate the final book cost to be around $20. Books will be ordered with your registration. If there is more than one attendee from your household, you may designate if you want more than one book.  You will be notified by email when the books are available for pick up.

There are two time options and both sessions/all classes are on the following Tuesdays: January 9, 16, 23, 30 and February 6, 2024.  Select the time that works best for you and complete your registration with the appropriate link below.
