Gospel Mass Pic“GOSPEL MASS”
8:30am & 11:00am Worship Services
with the Christus Victor Senior Choir

36 years ago Robert Ray, a music and piano performance major from Northwestern University was asked to compose an African-American Mass. Ray grew up in the AME church and carried the style of music that he grew up with into this work. The official premier was at the University of Illinois-Urbana in 1979. It was an experimental work intended for a one- time performance. To his surprise, the piece caught on and has become a pioneering work of African-American music, performed by choirs and churches of many denominations all over the world.
On Sunday, Feb. 21st, at both services, the Christus Victor Senior Choir will be singing Robert Ray’s “Gospel Mass” instead of using our traditional Lutheran liturgy. What does that mean for the congregation? You won’t sing the liturgy, the choir will. Yes, there still will be hymns and prayers and a gospel and a sermon and communion – all the normal stuff in worship. Our liturgy will just have a black Gospel flair, sung with our own Lutheran style!  We have some beautiful soloists from within our choir and some guest instrumental artists from outside our choir to help make this thing “kick.” We hope you will be there to worship with us! This a great Sunday to invite others to join us in worship.

 What is this series about?

Have you ever wondered, “What is the book of Revelation all about?” Most of our understanding of the book of Revelation has been influenced by the “Left Behind” series of books and movies, which are based on the “pre-millennial dispensationalism” theories of defrocked Anglican priest, John Nelson Darby, from the early 1800’s. This series will examine an alternative and older understanding and interpretation of the book of Revelation, that includes an understanding of the historical context, literary nature and structure of the book, as well as a close reading of the warnings, encouragements, and promises contained in Revelation that can fill us with hope and faith for God’s promised future in Christ Jesus.

Sunday, January 24 at 9:45am between services! We will celebrate the many accomplishments of the committees and ministries of the church, approve the budget for 2016, elect new members to church council, and look forward to God’s Calling for the new year and beyond
