“For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.”
– John 3:16
“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” – John 13: 35
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” – John 15: 12
“From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” – Ephesians 4: 16
Dear Friends in Christ, whom God loves,
As we celebrate God’s love revealed and given to us through Jesus Christ this Holy Week and Easter, I am reminded of all of the places in the New Testament that call us to live our lives out of God’s love for us. There are over 200 verses in the New Testament that encourage, challenge, and remind us to show godly love for one another. Loving relationships are central part of what it means to be a Christian and to be a Christian community. Can I get an “Amen?”
When we are firmly rooted in God’s love, surrounded by God’s love in our worship and in our community, we experience the power and joy of God’s Grace. It is a beautiful and life-changing experience when God’s love is poured into our hearts through hearing God’s Word, receiving Christ’s Body and Blood, singing songs of praise and thanksgiving, passing the peace, and praying to the Lord. Our hearts and minds are transformed when we share God’s love with one another, and treat each other with God’s love in our hearts.
But there is a reason that there are so many reminders in the Bible to live through God’s love for us. The fact is we forget God’s love, and we fail to love one another with godly love. And when we do not experience God’s love, or when we do not believe and trust in God’s love, it turns into a downward cycle that feeds on itself, which leads to hopelessness, despair, emptiness, rejection, and people leaving the church to find a substitute for God’s love elsewhere.
Recently I have been connecting with a number of people who have either left the church, or who moved and have not been able to find a church where they have experienced God’s love. One person wrote to me: “I don’t want to be preached to about political topics; I don’t want to have to seek out the information booth to find eye contact and a smile. I want a community, I want to feel loved, I want to be challenged, I want to be involved, but the longer it takes to find those things the quicker other things fill up the time that once was reserved for church.” As I read those words, at the same time I was looking over a list of people who have faded away from our own church, and was overcome by guilt, grief, and frustration. We all have a long way to go in living out of God’s love for us in Jesus Christ. Lord, help us to receive your love into our hearts, minds, and souls, and may your love flow out of us in our daily lives and in all of our relationships. May the world, starting with the people around us, know we are Christians by our love!
Happy Easter! Christ is Risen! God loves you!
